Our Child health – Common Conditions Service is available so that your child can get the help and treatment needed to alleviate their symptoms and provide them with the treatment they need for a speedy recovery.

If you are concerned about your child’s health and would like a quick face-to-face appointment for diagnosis and treatment, book an appointment at any of our pharmacy branches.

Note: this service will intially be available every Thursday at our Alwoodley branch.

How our Child Health Service can help your child get the treatment they need

Think your child may have a health problem? Our pharmacists are on hand to provide quality health advice and treatment.

Independent prescribing pharmacists help ensure that people have access to safe and high-quality healthcare, addressing health issues before they get worse. They are able to prescribe medicines for any condition within their clinical competence.

Sometimes while your children may have a health problem, your busy life or the thought of trying to make a GP appointment means you might not talk to a healthcare professional.

Pharmacy+Health provides you with accessible, highly-trained healthcare professionals that can see you quickly without having to wait. Book a face-to-face consultation in one of our branches’ private consultation rooms to discuss your symptoms.

Conditions we treat

Our pharmacist will ask you and your child questions and carry out a thorough clinical assessment before making a diagnosis and prescribing treatments for the following conditions:

  • Skin rashes
  • Viral rashes
  • Bacterial respiratory rashes
  • Gastro-intestinal symptoms
  • Ear infections
  • Throat infections
  • Croup (infection of the upper airway)
  • UTIs

How does this service work?

Treatments

Depending on the consultation, your pharmacist might recommend the supply* of one of the following medicines for your child:

  • Analgesics
  • Antibiotics
  • Antifungals

What is community pharmacy independent prescribing?

This services allows community pharmacists to develop and utilise their clinical skills and capabilities as a part of a wider shift across the health system to improve access to care in local communities and address health inequalities.

The NHS Community Pharmacy Independent Prescribing Programme aims to establish a framework for the future commissioning of NHS community pharmacy clinical services that incorporate independent prescribing for patients in primary care.

Pharmacy+Health is changing, to offer you convenient, health appointments.  This includes free NHS appointments for a range of common conditions, so if you’re feeling symptoms for:

As part of the Pharmacy First service, our pharmacists are now able to offer effective medication for common conditions without the need for a GP appointment. Simply visit your local Pharmacy+Health team to learn more about how we can help you treat earache and ear infections via this NHS scheme.

Any prescription only medicines prescribed and supplied may have side effects. The healthcare professional has no control and can not be held liable for any side effects or adverse reactions which you may experience.

Your health consultation will be provided by an appropriate and qualified healthcare professional. Subject to the service you book this will either be a Pharmacist Independent Prescriber acting within the scope of their clinical practice or a Pharmacist under a Patient Group Direction framework.

Frequently Asked Questions

If your child has a health problem that you suspect is unlikely to go away on its own, make a convenient appointment to discuss it with one of our trained pharmacists. Book an appointment at any of our  pharmacy branches for help with a range of conditions that we can diagnose, and issue prescription treatments for. Our pharmacists can offer advice and treatment, and may be able to prescribe medicine without you needing to see a doctor.

Our pharmacist will discuss with you whether your child’s symptoms are a match for the conditions for which they can provide treatment. They may determine that the supply of some medication is appropriate (additional cost). This clinically approved supply can be carried out under what is known as a Patient Group Direction. Alternatively the pharmacist may decide that supply is not appropriate or that a referral needs to be made to another healthcare professional.

Whilst the NHS commissions pharmacies to provide a small number of clinical services, we are able to provide a much wider range on a private basis. A small fee of £25 gives you face-to-face access to our trained healthcare team to help you get the treatment you need quickly.
