Pharmacists spend most of their days dispensing medication to patients, often taking them away from being able to dispense something else they are highly skilled to deliver – clinical services to patients.  But that’s all about to change at Pharmacy+Health.  

With nearly half of the UK on repeat medication and access to GP appointments become scarcer, we’re making some big changes to ensure prescriptions aren’t the only things on offer to the communities we serve.

One of those changes is the use of state-of-the-art prescription automation technology.

Soon, behind the scenes at Pharmacy+Health we will start to use hub and spoke prescription automation. The hub is where prescriptions are dispensed using cutting-edge technology. The spoke is the pharmacy. It’s a tech-savvy way to process repeat prescriptions that’ll make a real difference to all of our patients.  

How? It’ll free up dispensing time in our pharmacies, allowing our highly trained teams to deliver more NHS and private clinical services, from treating skin complaints like rashes, to administering flu jabs and advising on minor conditions like coughs and colds. While helping improve dispensing accuracy.

It’s not only time that’ll be saved, but space too. When repeat medication is stored at the hub, there’s less need to have large quantities in our pharmacies. This saves a lot of square inches – which we plan to turn into private patient consultation space. After all, no one wants to discuss their health issues in full view or earshot of other patients.

Lockdown reminded us of the value of pharmacists. When GP practices couldn’t see patients, pharmacies remained open. With the pressures that GP practices are currently under, GPs alone cannot shoulder the burden.

But a little-known secret is that pharmacists can often provide the care and treatment you need without a trip to the GP.

This is just one of the ways we plan to use technology to transform our pharmacies, helping us to offer you a more personal, patient-focused approach to healthcare.
