What is Shingles?

Shingles is a painful rash caused by the reactivation of the chickenpox virus (varicella-zoster). While anyone who has had chickenpox can develop shingles, it’s most common and most severe in adults aged 50 and over or those with weakened immune systems.

After you recover from chickenpox, the virus stays dormant in your body. Years later, it can reactivate as shingles and triggered by age, illness, or stress.

Symptoms include:

• A painful, tingling rash (usually on one side of the body)
• Itching or burning skin
• Fatigue, headache, and fever
• In some cases, long-term nerve damage

Shingles can severely impact your quality of life, especially if the nerve pain becomes chronic. The shingles vaccine is your best protection.

All our staff carrying out vaccinations have been trained and follow a prescribed process, to ensure your safety and comfort. Who Can Get the Shingles Vaccine?

Our private service is available to:

• Adults aged 50 and over
• Adults 18+ with weakened immune systems or underlying health conditions
• Anyone who wants protection but is not yet eligible for the NHS vaccine

If you are eligible for the NHS vaccine and wish to receive it privately or more quickly, our service is available for you to book conveniently at multiple branch locations.

You will be assessed during a free consultation to confirm eligibility and discuss any medical history or medication concerns.

Not suitable for:

• Those with a severe allergy to any component of the vaccine
• Individuals with a fever or serious illness on the day of vaccination

Types of Vaccines Available

We offer a non-live, two-dose shingles vaccine proven to offer over 90% protection. It is suitable for people with weakened immune systems and those seeking longer-lasting protection.

Two doses given 2–6 months apart

Administered in your upper arm

Possible minimal side effects may include redness, soreness, or fatigue.

You’ll have a free consultation with our vaccinator to assess your suitability and go through any medical history or current medications.

Full Course (two doses): £440

You’ll pay £220 per dose, but you also have the option to book both during your initial visit.

When to Book

It’s never too early to protect yourself, especially if you’re over 50. While shingles can happen any time of year, your immunity may be lower in autumn and winter, making vaccination before colder months ideal.

We recommend booking your first dose as soon as you’re eligible so you can complete the full course within the advised timeframe.

Your Shingles vaccination will be administered by a professionally trained Pharmacy+Health vaccinator in a private consultation room. Your first appointment is free and includes a review of your medical history and vaccine suitability.

How the Service Works

Appointments are quick and take place in your Pharmacy+Health private consultation room at many of our local community pharmacies.

1. Free clinical consultation with one of our trained vaccinators to assess your eligibility and answer questions.
2. Vaccination is given as a single injection, typically in the upper arm.
3. You’ll receive clear aftercare advice, including information on possible side effects (mild redness, fatigue, or muscle aches).

Why We’re Providing Vaccinations

Many of the conditions that we offer vaccines for, are very prevalent in the UK population and can make you feel very unwell or worse. The NHS typically offers these vaccinations but with eligibility criteria limiting their availability. Paying to vaccinate yourself, if you are not eligible, is an investment in your health and wellbeing.

Widely available across Yorkshire communities at Pharmacy+Health branches, this service provides convenient access to a range of vaccines, to protect you against specific diseases.

These vaccines may not be available through the NHS to all patients. With the symptoms and consequences of some of these common diseases being very serious, getting vaccinated through our paid-for service, can be a wise investment in your future health.

• Highly infectious conditions that can have serious or potentially fatal outcomes
• Can also lead to complications like meningitis, encephalitis (inflammation and swelling of your brain) and deafness
• MMRVaxPRO or Priorix

Meningitis B (Coming soon)

• Protects against bacterial infections caused by meningococcal group B bacteria
• MenB can cause serious illnesses, including, meningitis (an infection in the brain and spinal cord)
• Septicaemia (blood poisoning)
• Sepsis (a life-threatening reaction to an infection)

Pneumococcal (Coming soon)

• Helps protect against serious illnesses like pneumonia and meningitis
• Pneumovax 23 , Prevenar 13
• It can also help protect against other illnesses such as sinusitis and ear infections.

Covid-19 Booster (Private and NHS)

Helps protect against COVID-19, which can be a serious or life-threatening illness.
