How our Skin Health Service can help you get the treatment you need
Think you may have a skin health problem? Our pharmacists are on hand to provide quality skin health advice and treatment.
Independent prescribing pharmacists help ensure that people have access to safe and high-quality healthcare, addressing health issues before they get worse. They are able to prescribe medicines for any condition within their clinical competence.

Sometimes you have a health problem and your busy life or the thought of trying to make a GP appointment means you might not talk to a healthcare professional.
Pharmacy+Health provides you with accessible, highly-trained healthcare professionals that can see you quickly without having to wait. Book a face-to-face consultation in one of our branches’ private consultation rooms to discuss your symptoms.
Skin conditions we treat
Our pharmacist will ask you questions and carry out a thorough clinical assessment before making a diagnosis and prescribing treatments for the following conditions:
- Fungal and candida infections (excluding fungal nail infections)
- Acne (topical treatments only)
- Rosacea (topical treatments only)
- Inflammatory skin disorders and psoriasis (Topical treatments only)
- Dry Skin
- Herpes Zoster
- Skin infections (e.g. Impetigo, cellulitis) & paronychia
- Skin reactions (urticaria, hives, bites/stings)
How does this service work?
Treatments
Depending on the consultation, your pharmacist might recommend the supply* of one of the following medicines for your skin:
- Topical and oral
- Steroids
- Emollients
- Antifungals
- Antibiotics
- Antihistamines

What is community pharmacy independent prescribing?
This services allows community pharmacists to develop and utlise their clinical skills and capabilities as a part of a wider shift across the health system to improve access to care in local communities and address health inequalities.
The NHS Community Pharmacy Independent Prescribing Programme aims to establish a framework for the future commissioning of NHS community pharmacy clinical services that incorporate independent prescribing for patients in primary care.
Pharmacy First Common Conditions Service?
Pharmacy+Health is changing, to offer you convenient, health appointments. This includes free NHS appointments for a range of common conditions, so if you’re feeling symptoms for:
- Blocked or infected sinuses (over 12’s-adults)
- Sore throat (over 5’s-adults)
- Earache (1-17 yr olds)
- Infected insect bite (over 1’s – adults)
- Impetigo (over 1’s – adults)
- Shingles (over 18’s)
- Urinary tract infection (UTI) (Women 16-64)
As part of the Pharmacy First service, our pharmacists are now able to offer effective medication* without the need for you to book an appointment with your GP first. Simply visit your local Pharmacy+Health team to learn more about how we can help you treat your condition via this NHS scheme.

Your health consultation will be provided by an appropriate and qualified healthcare professional. Subject to the service you book this will either be a Pharmacist Independent Prescriber acting within the scope of their clinical practice or a Pharmacist under a Patient Group Direction framework.

If you have a skin health problem that you suspect is unlikely to go away on its own, make a convenient appointment to discuss it with one of our trained pharmacists. Book an appointment at any of our pharmacy branches for help with a range of aches and pains, including coughs, colds, and the flu. Our pharmacists can offer advice and treatment, and may be able to prescribe medicine without you needing to see a doctor.
Our pharmacist will discuss with you whether your symptoms are a match for the conditions for which they can provide treatment. They may determine that the supply of some medication is appropriate (additional cost). This clinically approved supply can be carried out under what is known as a Patient Group Direction. Alternatively, the pharmacist may decide that supply is not appropriate or that a referral needs to be made to another healthcare professional.
Whilst the NHS commissions pharmacies to provide a small number of clinical services, we are able to provide a much wider range on a private basis. A small fee of £30 gives you face-to-face access to our trained healthcare team to help you get the treatment you need quickly.
